Do you ever come from a doctor’s office with way too little information about your condition and you feel like you’re too much on your own?
There are several things you can do and one you cannot. You can’t force your doctor or anybody else in a position to do this, to give you all of the information you need or want. Complaining won’t get you far, but looking for help in other places you can turn to, can.
Things you can do:
- Go back to the doctor (or other therapist) to ask some more questions.
- Turn to other doctors and health care workers.
- Talk to other people you know who went through the same condition you’re dealing with. Support and self-help groups could be a great source if you don’t know anybody on your own. You might not always get all of the information you seek, but you can get some support, which is very important too.
- Read some books and turn to the internet – this can be a bit sensitive area, because you need to be very critical about the sources of information. Internet is full of great resources, but not all of them are good. You can be much on your own here. Do you have any tips of your own, about how to filter things a bit?
- Write a journal about things that already helped you. You can use it any time in the future for self-help purposes.
Even when you’re left completely on your own, you still have some life experience on your own to begin with. Remember, use and reuse that knowledge. Mindfulness might come handy here.
Another video worth sharing. Its message applies to the whole mental health field, far beyond ADHD.
I’m really grateful for all of the people who are helping to spread the word and knowledge to others. From doctors, nurses to individuals on YouTube, blogs and elsewhere. Thank you.
What are your strategies like, when you’re left on your own?
Do you know any good source of mental health information that helped you? Please share it in the comments bellow.
The problem begins when society has a lack of self-awareness and education for the different types of mental health problems or health conditions in general. The usage of Ritalin in children and even the rush to diagnose children with ADHD should be a concern, and we should question ourselves why children are suffering from this? What are the causes? Do they have a healthy household in which they can grow and be who they are?
Unfortunately, not all doctors have the necessary sensibility to deal with patients/clients, and therefore another opinion or a doctor should always be a possible path to follow. But it leads to another question: Do people have money to afford private medical health services, for example? Is the private service the easy road to get proper treatments and medical monitoring?
Take care of yourself, Maja 🙂
This goes way beyond ADHD. It could apply to the whole mental health area. But that’s just my opinion.
Money is the other aspect. Healthcare can be quite a challenge in many countries in this matter.
Thanks for sharing your deep thinking and care. I’m always looking forward for your comments. Thanks Alexandra. Take care you too 🙂
Big kiss, my darling <3
I agree with you about information online. I think it can be helpful to start with really reputable sources like government health agencies, psychiatric associations, or universities to get core factual information, and then expand the search outward from there.
Indeed. Thanks for pointing this out.
Great article again. Sad video though. It’s awful that even people with a lot of comparative advantage still suffer horribly by a system that doesn’t care.
Good idea to post information to help. Mine’s not very general I’m afraid, but hopefully we can all add specifics and it will add to a general guide. Here’s some of mine I found useful:
Autism
General info – https://www.autism.org.uk/about.aspx
Screener questionnaire to rule it in or out: https://www.aspietests.org/raads/
ADHD
Screener questionnaire – https://med.nyu.edu/psych/sites/default/files/psych/psych_adhd_checklist_0.pdf
Some actual general Psychiatric information:

Sad indeed 🙁
Your info doesn’t have to be general. Mental health is a wide area. Anything that might help somebody can be useful. If not for somebody else, you might think of them more often and especially in a moment when you might need them for yourself. Because you just wrote them once more.
I know I might sound silly, but these little things are important.
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your resources. 🙂
I had a real struggle with Kaiser over providing me with the only treatment recommended for my condition: a psychotherapist. I went straight to the director and I got what I wanted.
Yup, There are lot of information on internet about everything but it is difficult to find the correct information. A normal person can easily founds thousands of diseases with him to read these information… 🙂
